比較

比較とは、2つ以上のものの「違い」や「差」を表す表現です。英語では主に 比較級（comparative）、最上級（superlative）、そして 原級の比較（equative or equality comparisons） の3つの形を使って表します。

比較級（Comparative）

2つの対象を比べて、どちらがより…かを表します。

  • 作り方
    • 1音節の形容詞・副詞：語尾に -er をつける
      例：tall → taller, fast → faster
    • 2音節以上の形容詞・副詞：前に more をつける
      例：careful → more careful, beautiful → more beautiful
  • 基本構文
    主語 + 動詞 + 比較級 + than + 比較対象
    例：He is taller than his brother.（彼は兄より背が高い）
  • 例文
    • My house is larger than yours.（私の家はあなたの家より大きい）
    • This book is more interesting than that one.（この本はあの本より面白い）

最上級（Superlative）

3つ以上の中で最も…であることを表します。

  • 作り方
    • 1音節の形容詞・副詞：語尾に -est をつけ、前に the をつける
      例：tall → the tallest, fast → the fastest
    • 2音節以上の形容詞・副詞：前に the most をつける
      例：careful → the most careful, beautiful → the most beautiful
  • 基本構文
    主語 + 動詞 + the + 最上級
    例：She is the smartest student in the class.（彼女はクラスで一番頭がいい）
  • 例文
    • Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan.（富士山は日本で一番高い山です）
    • This is the most beautiful painting I have ever seen.（これは私が今まで見た中で一番美しい絵です）

原級の比較（Equality Comparison）

「～と同じくらい…」を表し、違いがないことを示します。

  • 基本構文
    主語 + 動詞 + as + 形容詞・副詞 + as + 比較対象
    例：She is as tall as her brother.（彼女は兄と同じくらい背が高い）
  • 例文
    • This novel is as interesting as that one.（この小説はあれと同じくらい面白い）
    • He runs as fast as his friend.（彼は友達と同じくらい速く走る）

比較表現のポイントと注意

  • 短い形容詞は比較級・最上級で語尾変化、多音節形容詞は more / the most を使うのが基本。
  • 比較対象を示すときは than を使う。
  • 同格の比較（原級の比較）では as ... as の構文を使う。
  • 否定文や疑問文でも比較表現は使える（例: He is not taller than me. / Is she as busy as you?）。
